How to Create M3U URL: The Practical Answer

Making an M3U playlist takes nothing more than a text editor. The format is a header line, then two lines per channel: one describing it and one pointing at its stream.

The layout, line by line

  • Line 1: #EXTM3U
  • Channel line: #EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="news.us" tvg-logo="https://…/logo.png" group-title="News",My News Channel
  • Stream line: the full address of that channel’s stream, on the line directly below.
  • Repeat the pair for every channel, then save the file as UTF-8 with the .m3u extension.
  • Only add streams you have the right to use, such as your own cameras, public broadcasts or links your provider gives you.

Step by step

  • Open a text editor. Use Notepad, TextEdit in plain-text mode, or any code editor.
  • Add the header. Type #EXTM3U on the first line.
  • Describe a channel. Add an #EXTINF line with the duration, tags and the channel name after a comma.
  • Add its stream. Put the stream address on the next line.
  • Save as UTF-8. Save with an .m3u (or .m3u8) extension and UTF-8 encoding.
  • Load it. Open the file in VLC, Kodi or another player to check every entry plays.

Which format to use

An M3U link delivers everything as one long list and leaves the player to sort it. An Xtream Codes login lets the player request each part on its own, which means quicker loading, tidy Movies and Series sections and a guide that fills itself in. Use Xtream wherever the player offers it and keep M3U as the fallback.

Keeping a playlist private

Your M3U link and Xtream details contain your username and password in plain text. Anyone who has them can use your line, and every extra stream counts against your connections, so don’t post them in forums or screenshots. If a link leaks, ask your provider to change the password, which makes the old link stop working.

Why does my M3U playlist load slowly?

A full lineup is a large file, and the player has to read all of it. An Xtream login loads in sections and is faster; hiding groups you never watch helps too.

Can I open an M3U file in VLC?

Yes. Use Media > Open Network Stream for a link, or open the file directly. VLC plays the channels but has no TV guide, so a dedicated IPTV player is nicer for daily viewing.

Where do I get an M3U link?

From your provider. Ultra 8K IPTV sends an M3U link along with the Xtream Codes details in the same WhatsApp message.

Is M3U the same as M3U8?

As playlists, nearly. M3U8 is M3U saved in UTF-8 text, and most players open both. In HLS streaming, though, .m3u8 also names the segment list of a single stream.
