What Is the Difference Between M3U and M3U8: A Plain Guide
M3U8 is the same playlist format as M3U, saved as UTF-8 text so names in any language display correctly. The extension is also used by HLS streaming, where an .m3u8 file lists the short video segments of a single stream rather than a set of channels.

No jargon for its own sake: just how it works, what it means for your setup, and how to get going.
Two jobs, one extension
As a channel list, an .m3u8 file works exactly like an .m3u file; the 8 only says the text is UTF-8, which keeps accents and non-Latin channel names intact. Most players accept either.
As part of HLS streaming, an .m3u8 file is a manifest for one stream. It lists video segments a few seconds long, often in several qualities, and the player switches between them as your connection changes.
Which format to use
An M3U link delivers everything as one long list and leaves the player to sort it. An Xtream Codes login lets the player request each part on its own, which means quicker loading, tidy Movies and Series sections and a guide that fills itself in. Use Xtream wherever the player offers it and keep M3U as the fallback.
Keeping a playlist private
Your M3U link and Xtream details contain your username and password in plain text. Anyone who has them can use your line, and every extra stream counts against your connections, so don’t post them in forums or screenshots. If a link leaks, ask your provider to change the password, which makes the old link stop working.
In practice
- Copy the details. Open your login message and copy the M3U link or the three Xtream fields.
- Choose the login type. In the player, add a new playlist or user and pick Xtream Codes or M3U URL.
- Paste and save. Enter the details exactly, including http:// and the port, and save.
- Add the guide. For M3U, paste the XMLTV link into the EPG field; Xtream logins usually find it alone.
- Let it load. Wait for the channel list and guide to finish downloading before browsing.
