Guide

This guide is written for US viewers and keeps to what is useful: how it works, what to watch for, and what to do next.

How IPTV works

A provider takes in each channel, encodes it into a compact digital stream and sends it from its servers to your player when you ask for it. Unlike broadcast TV, nothing is sent until you choose a channel, which is why IPTV can offer far more channels than a cable system has room for. Your player buffers a few seconds ahead so short dips in the connection don’t show.

Three ways to watch

  • Live TV: channels as they air, with a guide like cable’s.
  • Video on demand: movies and full series to start whenever you like.
  • Catch-up: recent programs to replay, on Ultra 8K IPTV for the last 7 days on supported channels.

Where IPTV fits

Cable and satellite deliver channels over their own lines and need a box from the operator. Streaming apps such as YouTube TV or Sling TV are IPTV services too, each with its own app and lineup. A general IPTV subscription works in third-party player apps instead, so one login can cover many devices and a broader lineup, with quality that depends on the provider.

The basics to get going

  • A subscription that provides a login.
  • A player app on a smart TV, streaming stick, phone or computer.
  • About 10 Mbps per HD screen or 25 Mbps per 4K screen.
